Chapter XII

Hades. The southern region of the Krontikle Mountains.

Ken found it hard to drag himself out of his bed. He had another hard day ahead. The twins were sleeping on the bed next to his. At least they didn’t have any problems. He stroked their heads. Sweet little babies who hadn’t learnt the cruel side of life. Although this was not entirely true. Their carefree manner was somehow disappearing and the smiles fading off their usually cheerful faces. They must have sensed that their parents were going through a rough patch.

He went to the kitchen. Giselle was sitting there, staring blankly at holovision. Lora Lock, the celebrity, was presenting her charms in a rerun of a local program.

“Hi, honey, what’s up?” he asked. She didn’t answer and dodged his kiss.

Yesterday evening was one of those especially unpleasant ones. Ever since they moved to a new flat, which was much smaller than their previous one, they didn’t often have the opportunity to enjoy each other. The investigation that was supposed to explain the circumstances of death of Marcus de Vitto dragged their contacts with him under public scrutiny. All former employees of Nordic knew that she used to be his lover and that her husband had known about everything all along. Thanks to Marcus, they were allowed access to the exploitation of the plots rich in ore, and the corrupt Nordic management treated them better as well. Once the truth came out, they were stigmatized. The whole mining community despised them.

The situation improved a little after Uroboros Industrial was set up. Nordic disappeared off the stage and the old connections lost any value within an instant. The miners were moved to new excavation sites, and in their place new workers, who had come from other worlds, arrived. A new chapter had begun in their lives.

During the conjunction, part of the Krontikle mountain range was torn apart and collapsed under the surface, creating a sea of lava in its wake. Two ranges, northern and southern with a lot of land between them, remained. The area around the second one was especially rich in ore, even for Hades. Nowhere in the universe known to humans were they so rich and pure. No wonder Uroboros increased excavation in that particular region. To make it happen, the living space of miners was limited to the bare minimum. They were squeezed like sardines. Ken and Giselle, together with their two children, had to make do with twelve square yards, a small kitchenette and a shared bathroom, located at the end of a hall.

“Would you like some coffee?” he offered to his wife.

No answer. They hardly had the opportunity to enjoy each other’s company and their sex life was almost ruined. The few instances of making love on the side, so that the children wouldn’t hear them, irritated rather than brought pleasure. So they both looked forward to the prospect of spending an evening alone. Ken gave a sweet present to the kindergarten teacher and asked her to take care of the children longer.
